We are busy at Cura Orphanage creating the best possible environment for our children. There are many ways for you to be involved in the ongoing work of Cura. From the outset of our work in Cura, the overall purpose has been to improve the quality and standard of life of ALL of the Cura villagers, and not just the children who live in the Home. We work to do so through enhanced health care, education, environment and economic well-being, and a great deal has already been accomplished! Many of these projects have at least one partner or partner organization, and each of these projects requires additional financial support to build on our success so far:

The following are projects we are currently working to fully fund:

The children’s home

We wish to welcome more orphans to the home. We have a capacity to house 150, and there is a long waiting list. What is needed is further funding to give us the confidence that we can sustain the bigger number beyond the current 50.

We did not wish to rush at expanding the intake until we felt confident that we have what it takes to do an excellent job. From what we have seen and from what we hear from those who visit we have actually built a model institution, where the children blossom – socially, academically and physically.

Education and Youth

The village of Cura is home to one pre-primary and one primary school, and all of the children from the Cura Rotary Home are enrolled at one or the other. The children, the teachers and the parents all require support to maximize the positive impact of education on this community. The teachers are eager for professional development, and the computer lab requires ongoing maintenance and staffing. We want to develop recreational and income-generating activities for young people who are currently an untapped resource for the community, and we hope to build and staff a secondary school within the next two years. We also look forward to adding vocational training and recreational activities for our students. Our current partners include The DEPOT and the Girl Guides of Kenya.

Agriculture

In Cura village, people are hard working. With added farming knowledge and skills, they could produce more higher value-add agricultural products, both for consumption and for sale. If advisory services in agriculture were made available, and cooperation among farmers significantly increased, such increased production from the fertile land would be possible. We have already partnered with experts to expand crops and identify markets, and we hope to build on our existing successes with the banana-growing and beekeeping projects so that the profits from them can be returned to and reinvested in the community. Our current partners include Africa-Harvest (supported by USAID and Dupont) for the banana program and Honeycare Africa.

Infrastructure

The need for water in Cura is critical. The community's effort to provide clean drinking water is evident by their ability to maintain the only successful “project” water supply in the area. The need to increase the capacity and consistency of the water (the earlier bore-hole could only be used once per week) has now been met: the Rotary Club of Abbington in the U.S helped with drilling the new bore-hole and providing the tanks. The provision of safe water to the community not only improves farming and irrigation, it also improves sanitation. We hope to lay pipes for both irrigation and homes, as well as to harvest rainwater and build reservoirs. Eventually, we hope to build on the initial research we’ve done regarding expanding electrification in Cura.

Community Resource Centre

In January 2009 both a computer lab and the library were completed (from scratch!) in the multi-purpose building, thanks to Bonnie Sutherland and her team of volunteers.

A trainer has been hired for the Computer Lab, and classes are being held. Joe Njenga, who is from Cura and is a senior ICT professional, is assisting by providing oversight for the development of the useage of the lab.

Of the 30 machines, one is now operating in the Home, for children’s records and soon for the website; one at the clinic, for patient records; one is with the Cura pastor; and a fifth is with the former pastor, now serving in an adjacent parish. Our current partner is Bonnie Sutherland of Affretech, Canada and her friends.

Health

Our three-roomed modern health clinic still lacks much that it needs, including a clinical officer, and further drugs and equipment. You can help us make the health clinic more functional and build a strong culture of prevention as well as cure. Your donation would help us provide medicine, equipment and personnel for immediate treatments, as well as additional medical counseling, training and support for the people of Cura. Eventually, we hope that the clinic will have the ability to admit patients for longer-term care, as well.

You can be involved in helping make this dream a reality.
